So I was driving east down the 7th Street/22 freeway Sunday night on my way home when I saw 5 glowing orbs that looked like they were hovering just above Saddleback. My view kept getting obstructed, but when I hit the straight away that merges with the 405 I got a perfect view and these fuckers were clearly pulsing and slowly gliding in all different directions. I admit I always jump to the UFO conclusion, but this is the first time I've become startled by what my eyes were actually focused on. I tried calling Chad, who I was just with to confirm these visuals but no response I came home to an empty house and felt like I was going to find Rubber Johnny in my room.

I spent the majority of yesterday searching for someone on the internet who could relate. no luck. Anyways here some pictures of this last weekends swell taken by Joe Katchka to make up for this rant.

Gotta love a broken zipper a few months shy of almost having this suit 1 whole season. Even better on a morning with waves at 6:45 AM. I heard so much hype about these suits before owning one. "ohhh best suit ever" , "So warm, warmest suit I've ever had" etc.

I can't back the bullshit. Here's my honest opinion of the 3/2/2 Matuse suit -

I put this suit on for the first time last February 2009 and surfed the Venice breakwall at 2:30 in the afternoon. I was cold within an hour. By June the suit was more or less completely leaking and had torn itself two holes in the chest panels where the smoothie met. Awesome. Alternating between this suit and an Aleeda for another few months (didn't wear it in summer, duh) the suit took it's final blow this morning, December 28 2009, with a busted zipper while suiting up in the parking lot. Feb-June, not wearing everyday because of alternating fullsuits = holes and leakage. Oct-December = Dusted ass suit. Fuck.

Now keep in mind I'm not a fucking retard and know how to put on a suit. I've worked in a surf shop for wayyyyy tooo long and instruct donkey's on the finer points of slipping on rubber daily. For the record, 80% of the time I changed into that Matuse suit I used a plastic bag because it was so damn hard to get into. Even bone dry it was a pain in the ass. The ankles were tighter than junior prom night. I babied the suit, meaning I wasn't a lazy fuck and washed the thing out every time, hung it in the garage out of the sunlight, and even used a super gay changing mat in the parking lot.

So there Ya go, a non bias review of a Matuse suit. Fuck the hype, these suits are mediocre at best. A good afternoon suit, as it's not that warm, but it is awfully flexible and comfortable. Final thoughts - next time you hear some siked yuppie talk up his matuse because he likes talking about how innovative and amazing it is (read, overly expensive and overly hyped) tell him to eat a dick and try a psycho 1.

The Hangover

We surfed our favorite state beach a couple of hours ago. Windy. Small. Too little tide.

It just felt good to get in and wash the lingering hangover away.

Party's over. Hit the showers. Pack our shit. Put the logs on the roof racks and pile in.

We pull out of the parking lot and start jamming home.

Thud.

I recognize that sound. I've heard it before. We look back, two boards are 100 feet behind us in the middle of the road. The third, which was on the bottom, flew over the guard rail and is sitting in the bike line of PCH southbound.

All in all, it could have been worse. We could have killed someone in some sort of negligent surfboard manslaughter. Three smashed tails, scuffed rails, and chipped fins....not bad.

The Mixed Platter

This is what I call a mixed platter. I make them when I feel like snacking on something but theres not really anything to eat in the fridge, or if i can't decide what I want. Tonight I chose muenster cheese, chips, turkey, an onion slice, a hard boiled egg, and some tuna. This is one of my weaker ones as I didn't have many options. I like to eat them with my fingers because it makes me feel like Denethor, the last Steward of Gondor. You know that scene in Return of the King when he is grubbing out and Pippin sings him that sad song all the while his son Faramir is getting aced? Yeah, that.

Tube Dodging 101

This was taken yesterday at a not so secret north county OC spot. Me and 2 other guys out on the entire stretch of beach. I caught 3 waves in a hour and a half. This was the first and biggest one.

I was a 1 pump chump. Bottom turn, pump, and straighten out before the closeout gets ya.

I rode my new bonzer and I couldn't be happier with it.

Nor Cal Adam

Adam is a So. Cal to Nor Cal transplant for school.

I met up with him and Julio last year over New Year's to surf OBSF. It was head high, a foot or two overhead on the sets and freezing with offshore winds.

I wore a 4/3, booties, and a hood and rode a 6'0".

Adam wore a 4/3 and rode a fish.

I was creepin' on his facebook and saw this gem from yesterday.














Apparently, the board he is on is some resurrected 8'6" gun with a dolphin airbrushed on it.
