Herb

just got Free & Easy by MacGillivray Freeman. this flick is the shit man. all the best longboarders from around 1966. it highlights surf heros like david nuuhiwa, nat young, billy hamilton, and herbie fletcher. i have been psyching on the hamilton and fletcher footage. herb was soooo good. his style translated really well on the big heavy logs. he does epic drop knee turns at honolua. i used to hate him and his longboard movies that came out in the 90's. funny thing is i owned every single one of them. there was always like 8 sections of him doing the side slip boogy over and over. Rhythm was my favorite. lots of joel and bikini clad butts. i have recently done a complete 180 with herb and his whole deal. those movies definitly were not pretty, but they always had fresh footage. still don't like the lame ass, old guy, surf music though. This video clip has bookends with more recent footage and a sweet little section from Free & Easy in the middle. the 60's footage starts at 3:55. enjoy.

1966

An important year for many things. The legendary album Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys was released. The Beatles played their very last concert at Candlestick Park in San Francisco, California. The Church of Satan was formed by Anton Szandor LaVey in San Francisco. And Nat Young knocked surfing on it's ass. Traditional longboarding was at it's peak in 66. Noseriding was king and everyone was ripping. Nat was rapeing. There is an obvious contrast in his style compared to everyone else. This is a great clip of the world contest that year. Audio gets fucked about half way through but the footage is classic. Anyone know what film this is from?
