Shred

Looked shitty, but we're wave starved.

Scotty here on the tip. I have 6 frames of him perched like this on this wave.

Douche McGregor putting his new Mo-dad through a thorough 5 point inspection.

Murder City on a 5'2" Stamps twin keel. Pardon the water drop.

As for myself, I floated around on the inside and shot photos because I feel like crap after beers, Rumplemintz, Cactus coolers, a mysto shot, and worst of all, an Ultimate Cheeseburger and fries from Jack in the Box around 2:30am last night/this morning.

F-curve

9" Hobie F-curve fin arrived in the mail last week. Psyched. I ordered it from the fine folks over at Surfy Surfy. Hopefully we'll have some waves soon so I can try it out on my 9'0" EC Daddy 0.

San Francisco

Just got home from San Francisco yesterday. Good trip. Surfed twice at Ocean Beach with my buddies Adam and Julio. I had been checking the reports and forecasts and didn't know what to expect. Head high? Triple Overhead? Flat? Everyone I had spoken to about the place told me to pack a big board and my balls. Well, I brought my 5'7" Frodo quad, 6'0" EC thruster, and a 6'11" GNK mini gun.

Anyways, it was a little overhead both days, cold, (nothing a good 4/3, hood, and booties couldn't fix) and pretty fun. I rode my 6'0" both times. There were still dudes out on 6'5" Black Beauties and 7'0" CI Guns though, which I didn't really understand. A few tough paddle outs, but nothing to write home about.

I had a pit stop in Santa Cruz to drop a board off and meet up with a buddy. We took PCH north to the city and I saw some super fun looking waves on the way up.

All in all. I didn't score, but at least I know where to go and that the area has a shitload of potential. I'll be back soon enough.

Disclaimer.

The dude paddling out didn't make it more than 30 yards from the sand for at least ten minutes. He eventually made it out.

Remember that scene in the North Shore when Kiani meets Rick while riding her horse on the beach? I didn't see any hot Hawaiian chicks on the beach here.

Julio brough his alaia and a hull. Ideal quiver for the conditions.

Julio's wetsuit had tar on the neck from a previous surf trip. Needless to say, he had scrubbed all the skin off the back of his neck by the end of the trip getting it all off.

North of Pigeon Point looked pretty gnar.

The lighthouse at Pigeon Point. I saw the biggest sea lion I have ever seen kicking it on the beach here.

I barely took any photos this trip. It was kinda difficult to fuck around with a camera out in the water. Numb hands. Clean up sets.

I didn't see it, but I heard a few dudes hooting after Adam got shacked on a good one.

Highlight of the trip was probably my trip to City Lights bookstore where I bought, A Field guide to Demons, Fairies, Fallen Angels, and Other Subversive Spirits. Nothing like some light reading on the crapper.

Two Thumbs Down...

0 Stars...

This so called artistic, new age, hipster, film begins with a subtitle that reads..."THE HANGOVER OF A POP CULTURE." I thought this subtitle was the most creative part of the while whole film. The slogan grabs the attention of the audience stimulating the mind which in turn tries to achieve some kind of profound meaning. The only problem is that if your going to make such a bold statement at the beginning of a film the audience is going to want evidence to support it. The film in no way shape of form produces any meaning of "THE HANGOVER OF A POP CULTURE." What the film does achieve for the audience is absolute boredom, shitty writing, and over dramatic pompous hipsters running around smoking cigarettes, having tea, and throwing their surfboards. Give us a break this has all been done before. It seems to me that this film is trying to document a culture that is not real. This "Pop Culture..." or in other words "Newport Beach Surf Culture" is simply trying to hard, and the build-up and production of this film is proof. I do not want to sit here and bash Alex Knost because he is a nice guy and he has done some cool things for alternative surfing. I mean I would rather watch Alex and his friends surf then watch the top WCT riders blow their fins out the back followed by four reverses on one wave. I just feel he needs to stick to surfing and the progressive style he brings to longboarding. Let us get back to the film... The film is just over done, every shot is too long and the little surfing there is can be classified as mediocre. I'm sure Tyler Manson and Alex Knost will have many excuses for why this is an art film and at the top of their list it probably reads "Art for Art's Sake" but give me a fucking break this whole thing is a joke with the Alex Knost Cult Community backing it. What I don't understand is how such an artistic driven company like RVCA can back such a lame piece of work. I gave this film a shot and was highly disappointed. I laughed more at the things they were trying to do because I really did not understand how these guys wanted to be taken seriously. To me they sat down and said, "Let's open the film with a make out scene, then I will have a smoke, then I will mess up my hair, then i will pack my punk tapes for my Walkman( so vintage brah!), next I will have some tea and bitch about nothing, then I will go surf, and then I am going to get pissed and throw my board around screaming profanities like a bitch. I will challenge anyone that comes up to me and says, "Well like if you think about it, it's kind of cool" or "Yeah, I get what they are trying to do" or "I respect them for taking the risk of the idea." NO! The people that say this are the ones trying to make excuses for this so called "Pop Culture" we live in. What really gets me going is that this was suppose to be for surfers and it only shows surfing for about four minutes out of the thirty one minute film. I'm sure Tyler and Alex are proud of their film and I am sure people enjoy this film but I thought it was crap and I wasted thirty minutes of my life. Stop trying to relive the past with your hobbies, fashion, and art. This film makes me depressed to be involved in a culture that lacks such originality. Enjoy...

The Surfer Mag message board has some diamond in the rough threads. Here is one about some guy's solo Baja trip. Octafish goes to Hexico.

Transilvanian Hunger

I drove around thismornin with my good friend Manny looking for some waves but they were few and far in between.
Notice the Pantera "Reinventing the Steel" license plate frame.
Nada!
We ended up in no man's land...
Knee high, cold and sunny, with nobody out pretty much makes for my ideal day. I came home and watched my car fail a smog test, and now I'm on my way out for round two on the low tide.

A. Knost

Everyone hates him on the SurferMag message board.

Exhibit A

It is pretty funny. Everytime he is brought up, people are either shitting their pants or creaming their jeans. Either way, undergarments are soiled and everyone is a winner.

Love him or hate him.

I dig his style and think he is a nice guy.

I am off like a prom dress. (to San Francisco)

The Mo-Dad

Joy to the world. A new sled is born.

Douche's new sled, in all it's glory. A blend between EC's Daddy-O (my personal favorite) and a Mod Sled.

9'4" 17"x23"x15.5"x3ish"

I bet you wish this was under your fuckin' tree today, huh? Santa doesn't B.T.S., that's EC's job.

Eric and his brother Chris with some inspiration.

New Sleds

Where Eagles Dare picked up a choice 5'7" Frodo bat tail quad. EC has made some adjustments since I got mine a year ago. Pulled in tail, pushed up wide point, different deck, and slight concave adjustments. Looks so fresh, and so clean. He will run some Speed Dialer Cutaways.

P-cakes also picked up a 6'1" EC Ryder quad. Makes me want to get an actual shortboard, kinda. Not really. Looks sick though.

DoucheMcGregor, WhereEaglesDare, and I picked up Douche's new 9'4" "Modad" this morning from Steve over at Aloha Glassing.

EC is all about B.T.S. Bringing the Sickness.

Herbie Fletcher

This guy is the fuckin' chief. Sure his surf videos have terrible soundtracks, too much water footage, and weird voice overs. But there is no denying that Herbie Fletcher left quite an impression on the surf community.

Here are two interviews with Herbie from Juice Magazine. 1 and 2

Some excepts:

Can you still get to the nose?

I fly on the nose. Are you kidding? At Backdoor. Nobody else can say that.

They can’t.
They don’t even want to attempt it. They go, “I can get in the tube, but not on the nose. No way.”

--------

Why were you anti-establishment then?

We were anti-establishment, because we were taking LSD. We were shunning the social and cultivating the elemental. It was hard to communicate with the straight people.

--------

Who was your main threat?
David Nuuhiwa was always number one. Everyone always tried to get away from David. He was hot. As the years went on, he was always number one and I was always number two. Nobody could beat David.

He was untouchable?

Yeah, he had so much style and so much grace. He was fast, and slinky like a snake. He didn't go to school, so he'd go surfing all the time.

Go Straight to Hell Boy

Six years ago today the world lost Joe Strummer. Without Joe and the Clash alot of the music that I cherish today definitely would not be here, and I'm sure the same goes for all of you out there. I trust everyone will be rocking out to the Clash all day today.

DEATH OR GLORY

Leroy "The Masochist"

I couldn't find the clip I wanted.

Psychologist: I see here they call you a masochist.

Leroy the Masochist:
I like pain.

Psychologist: Can you be specific? What kind of pain do you like?

Leroy the Masochist:
Any kind of pain.

Psychologist:
Such as?

Leroy the Masochist:
I like fights, I've dove through windows, I've eaten light bulbs, I like sharks, any kind of blood. If you gave me a gun, I'd shoot you in the face just to see what it looked like when the bullet hit.

Nose Slut

TJ's Harbour Nose Rider has been sitting in my garage for a quick minute. I am fixing a ding in the tail some barnyard put into it.

Anyways, the thing is killer. Nice outline, a shitload of tail kick, and a bunch of nose concave.

Basically designed to snort 8 balls of wave noserideage off the urinals in the men's room at Sutra Lounge in Costa Mesa while some roided out Affliction bro takes a shot of HGH in the ass after he slams some nameless chick in the stall next to you while some other dude is barfing vodka sodas out of his burning nostrils into the sink. Hey, it happens.

Hockey n' Jarritos

Went to the Kings v. Rangers game last night with a couple of dudes. Seeing as it was a New York game at least half of the crowd was rockin a Rangers jersey. Kings ended up losing in OT but it was a good game nonetheless. The highlight of the night came when some yuppie accidentally kicked over this ladies hot chocolate and did nothing about it, soon to be followed by said ladies fully tattooed, pierced, and pony-tailed husband tapping him on the shoulder and informing him that he had "five minutes to get my wife a new hot chocolate before I get thrown out of here for beating your ass." Needless to say I've never seen a gentlemen rush to get hot chocolate so fast in my life. The beverage was then immediately knocked over again by their son.

Before the game La$er and myself also made a trip to the 99 cent store and stocked up on Jarritos, crucifixion candles, and hand grippers. Very Crucial.

Greek Riots...

Now this doesn't have much to do with surfing, but talk about destroying. These are some of the most intense pictures I have seen in a while.

Don't worry. They are mannequins, not people.
