I stopped by the shop today. My old name tag is still on the wall of shame in the back. Pretty psyched on it. It's at least 5 years old or so.

Slacker

You may or may not have noticed my complete lack of posting as of late.

I got hitched, been workin', went to Kauai and Maui, camped in Catalina, turned 25, and went to New York. All in the last 6 weeks.

Needless to say the blog has been on the back burner.

Anyways, the most surf-related thing I have done lately was get some custom-made boardshorts for my Groomsmen.

D&J for Me (my wife and I's initials)

Anyways, here they are. Solid royal blue with white back pocket with snap closure. Made with lots of love by Sato down at Katin Surf Shop. I've known Sato since I got my first job at Katin when I was 15. She said she still thought I was a little boy, she couldn't believe it. Super psyched she was able to sew these up for me. Pretty special.

In the land of Hyperfreaks, Phantoms, eco this, eco that, wanna be poser bullshit that looks like some jock workout gear: it is nice to have a drawer full of something that has worked since the beginning.

No gimmicks. No uber-super-duper stretch. No bullshit.

Just some straight up old school marketing hype and a 90 year old Japanese lady with a sewing machine who knows what's up.

My brother and I headed over to Kanvas By Katin this past Sunday to order up some fresh trunks for summertime. Thanks to my increased consumption of beer and Mini Sirloin Burgers, none of my trunks from last year fit.

Not to worry, my skinny jeans still fit. They have a little stretch and give to them.

Anyways, Sato, the seamstress, was there stocking the racks. We tried on some pairs off the racks, got measured, picked out our fabrics, details, etc. and we were on our way.

Sato, has been there since the beginning, 1959 with Walter and Nancy Katin. Her son, Glenn now own the shop. I sincerely think that Sato is the hardest working person in the shop. If she isn't sewing, cutting, fitting, stocking the shelves, or taking out the trash, she is barking orders at Douche McGregor. Seriously.

While it is true that Katin does have some trunks made overseas, it is a pretty cool experience to go into a shop and have a custom pair made for you, right here in Southern California, by the same lady who made them 50 years ago.
