DisneyNature

After sneaking into Phillip Seymour Hoffmans recent failure "Doubt" I came across a billboard for DisneyEarth. Being intrigued I came home to find a trailer for it, though it looks like a Planet Earth rip off this new DisneyNature brand seems to have something going. I also checked out "Les Ailes Pourpres" a Flamingo documentary whose entire soundtrack is done by The Cinematic Orchestra.

Earth comes out April 22nd (Earth Day) they better have an IMAX release

Bottled Up Part Deux

All the way back in the early days of this blog, I posted up an article about plastic bottles and the Sigg that I bought...Bottled Up Part 1

A new series on VBS.tv made me want to revisit this issue. The series is called Garbage Island, it has 12 parts and it is about the North Pacific Gyre which is a swirling whirlpool of trash (mostly plastics) that will never fully biodegrade. I first remember hearing about Trash Island in my Marine Biology class in high school, thanks Mr. Duff!

The series is very well put together and informative on the issue at hand.

Anyways, I still have that Sigg water bottle, I use it every day and it has ended my 1 or 2 plastic water bottle per day habit that I had going. So, lets delve into the numbers.

I bought that Sigg last August, about 8 months ago, and I have avoided using 1 or 2 bottles a day. So roughly, 8 months x 30 days x 1.5 bottles = 360 bottles. Yes, I would have recycled them but that still does not negate the fact that the bottles were made out of virgin petroleum, which is a whole other issue.

It is also worth mentioning that I now use reusable hemp grocery bags and a recycled PET lunch bag from Reusuable Bags.

Here is part one of the VBS series, Garbage Island. It's mental.

Anyways, he just started a blog: Ride As Fast as You Can - They're Shooting to Kill

If you want to put him up for a night during his travels, send him a message on his blog. He is currently en route to Bowie, AZ.

I have been reading his blog and his posts on LA Fixed, he seems like a cool cat.

I Love Sharks

Check this out! Sightings at San-O, HB, and Santa Monica! I can't wait for shark week. So brutal.

Increased Shark Sightings In SoCal

Spring in on the horizon in Southern California and that can only mean one thing; Time for the annual shark sighting stories to scare the tourists and weekend surfers out of the water.

Just kidding.

But what is becoming a more common report are the sightings and encounters from around the Southern California areas. The following reports are taken directly from www.SharkResearchCommittee.com:

REPORT #2:

Huntington Beach — On March 7, 2008 Thomas Larkin was surfing with two friends. He recounted the following; “I was surfing a 6’6” Avisco (carbon fiber) Surf Prescriptions Bat Tail Quad. I paddled out at Dog Beach near Huntington Cliffs around 7:10 in the morning at a pretty full high tide. Dog Beach is located in a stretch of Huntington City Beach between Seapoint Street and Golden West Street. I was meeting two friends there, Matt Donoghue and Craig Angel. The current was moving around a lot of water, and both of them were on longboards, so about 20 minutes into the surf I was tired of paddling over to them on my shortboard, and was surfing pretty much alone. There were two bodyboarders about 100 yards north of me, and I was almost due west of the ramp walkway. At about 8:00 AM, I caught my best wave of the session, and even though Matt and Craig had already gotten out, I wanted one more. I paddled back out and was sitting in the lineup alone, with the closest surfers about 200 yards south, and the bodyboarders were inside and north. I was waiting for a set for about 5 minutes when I felt a jolt down on the tail of my board, immediately followed by violent bubble cascade, which sunk the board down about another 8 inches (see photograph). I didn’t really get what was going on as quickly as I should have, but as soon as it begun it had ended and I was apparently alone again. A wave popped up, I paddled into it but pearled because of the water in the nose of my board, I quickly got back on and paddled into the whitewater of the next wave and boogie boarded it to the beach where I emptied the board through the apparent bite mark." The diameter of the bite suggests an adult White Shark in excess of 15 feet in length.

Stingray kills sunbathing woman on boat in Florida Keys

By Associated Press

MARATHON — Officials say a Michigan woman died after a stingray jumped out of the water and struck her in the upper body in the Florida Keys.

Wildlife officials say the spotted eagle ray hit 57-year-old Judy Kay Zagorski of Pigeon, Mich., in the face or neck while she was in a boat with her family Thursday. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is investigating the death.

Officials say it's not clear whether the animal's barb struck her, or if the impact killed her. It's also not clear how big it was. The incident occurred near Vaca Key in Marathon, located in the Middle Keys of the island chain.

Spotted eagle rays can grow up to 17 feet in length, weigh up to 500 pounds and have a wingspan of up to 10 feet.

They are known to occasionally jump out of the water but are not aggressive and use the venomous tip at the end of their tail as a defense mechanism.

This is the new header I just drew up. I borrowed the quote from a Doors song.

I think I am going to get some shirts made. Any takers?

bottled up

Here is an excellent article from one of my favorite magazines, Fast Company. I try to avoid jumping on the bandwagon, but I beleive the environment to be a worthy cause.

Message in a Bottle

To sum up the article, a few things are happening...

We buy bottled tap water or something close to it (tap, filtered, artesian, well, purified, distilled, etc.).

$15 billion or 38 billion plastic bottles each year (a figure that is still creeping skyward).

About a 1/4 of these bottles actually make it into a recycling bin.

Tap water is fine for you, for the most part. Bottled water companies have done a mighty fine job of making us think otherwise.

Anyways, read the article and buy one of these... www.mysigg.com

I bought one about a month ago. Now, I refill it with purified water out of the sink. Reducing my bottled water use by 1 or 2 bottles per day.

Just a thought.
