SEWcreative is Motown Bound

My buddy Ian hit me up to help spread the word about his new project he has going on over at SEWcreative.

He is embarking upon a road trip to Detroit, pretty sure they are in Salt Lake City as I type this.

Taken from their site Motown Bound, this is what they are all about.

We at SEWcreative believe Ford is doing great things; from refusing government bail outs to shedding light on homelessness in America through the Invisible People Project. We also believe that we can help Ford come alongside human beings in unique and genuine ways that simultaneously drive real and measurable social change. So... with the help of our good friend Stewart of the Krochet Kids, we are driving out there to let them know!

Life is our journey, this is our mission.

5 days, 5 events, 2600 miles, Costa Mesa to Detroit.

Motorin'!

Take a gander. Also, this is surf related because more than likely, Ian surfs better than you.

Inside the Gold Mine

I think I have posted about this Onion-esque blog before: Inside the Goldmine. Anyways, epic post this week.

Legrope-Free Purist Slightly Less Smug After Fourth Swim To Beach.

Toonalook backbeach, January 18, 2010. – Local soul surfer Carl Reid's annoying air of superiority took a well-deserved setback today thanks to a number of tiring swims to retrieve his retro twin-fin fish.

Reid, 23, met two friends, John Mcphee and Wayne Tanner at Toonalook backbeach lookout at 3.00pm whereupon they agreed on a quick surf despite the marginal windswell on offer and rapidly dropping tide.

“We were getting changed and straight away Reidy was on our case for how lame we were for using a legrope on a two foot beachie.” recalls Tanner.

“Thing is, I kinda agree with him but there's something about the way smug prick comes over all fucken-holier-than-thou that makes me want to punch him in that goateed face of his.”

Reid, who adorns his boards with Sea Shepherd stickers, continued to lecture his friends about their 'infantile dependence' on the legrope as they made their way down to the water's edge.

Onlookers observed Reid’s legrope-free posturing and body language with distaste.

Bea Smith, 78, a long term Toonalook resident, walking her beagles along the beach at the time, commented to reporters. “Look at 'im, like a strutting peacock that boy is. Poser is what I reckon.”

Disdain soon turned to joy for the eyewitnesses as Reid lost his board four times in half an hour.

On each occasion he was forced to swim all the way to the beach.

“It was magic” claimed a clearly elated Mcphee, “the first time he swam in he was all like 'it's a good workout' and 'I'm feeling the flow' and stuff, but you could see him getting more and more pissed off. By the fourth swim he was fully losing his shit, swearing and carrying on.

“He'd be madly swimming after his board and every time he'd almost get to it, a little whitewater'd come through and take it out of his reach.”

Mcphee continued: “Kinda makes me believe that there might be some kind of karmic force behind the ways of the ocean after all., 'Cos anything that wipes that smug fucken I'm-more-in-tune-with-the-great-mysteries-of-the-ocean-than-you-look off his face has got to be good.”

Dungeon of Doom

This blog rules. Dungeon of Doom. The first post had me hooked...

"Usually when i wake up in the morning, i sit down at my desk, check the surf, and cruise on to www.surfline.com for some videos and pictures to pass my morning by. i usually scoff at the shitty music that playing behind the surfing. Do all surfers have shitty music taste nowadays?"

Exactly. Douche, Lightnar, and I have had this conversation a few times. Why does surfing love shitty music? Watch any video posted on Surfer, Surfline, etc. and prepare to have your eardrums raped by Mickey Avalon.

And longboard movies were always the WORST! Fvck surf guitar. Fvck super slo-mo. I love Herbie Fletcher, but his movies always had the most terrible soundtracks. Douche and I had nowhere else to turn to get our Tudor fix.

Update

Svrf&Destroy posse just got back from the lake. Sore as hell. We ate a shitload of bbq and drank a shitload of beers. Maybe I'll post some photos later. Maybe not.

Daley has a new post on his blog: Bummer It's Daley.

He doesn't post too often, but when he does it is damn good.

Here is a picture of Tate's dog, from his blog, The Lazy Daze.

I can't remember the dog's name, but I do know it is a Golden Doodle.

Paging Mr. Lightner to the Courtesy Phone

You have been officially added to the blog.

Svrf & Destroy fiend club posse now a staggering 7 dudes strong.

You may know Mr. Lightner from his previous work on such blogs as Radballs and Kyle Lightner.com

Shit's tight.

That's Kyle, second from the right, answering nature's call with a shaka to boot.

Joel Tudor x Loomstate

Since I was a grom, Joel was always my favorite surfer. I felt like no one else's longboarding was any good in comparison to his. (I pretty much still feel that way, with the exception of the young crop of so cal dudes.) Yeah, dudes were doing gnarly shit like airs, huge gnar shacks, crazy kick fives, heels, and stuff...but it all looked whack to me. Joel had a certain flow and minimalism in the water.

Joel at Pipe? Fuck off. So tight.

Joel at Puerto Escondido in Siestas and Olas? Fuck off again. Cheater 5 in the death pit to boosting a little mini air on the inside on a 9'10" single fin. Yeah bro. Dig it.

Douche McGregor and I used to copy all of the Joel Tudor sections out of every longboard movie we could get our hands on. We ended up with a 6 hour Joel Tudor reel. It was like watching the highlights of every movie, without any of the crappy stuff.

My walls were covered in every picture and poster I could cut out of surf mags.

I have a stack of every Longboard Magazine issue I could get my hands on that has an interview or cover shot of him.

We would drive down to Donald Takayama's shop and drool over Flow Models...and by "drive down" I mean get our moms to drive us for the day. We would cruise down to Cardiff, Swamis, Malibu, Windansea, and all the places we would see him shred in the movies.

We actually got to ride our friend's dad's 10' Flow Model at Bolsa one day.

When Tudor surfboards started up, we about shit ourselves. Douchemcgregor got a 9'4 Diamond Tail Noserider, so did MasaTom. MasaTom also had a Good Karma model (that flew off the roof of his rig on the way home from shredding one night.) Then Douchemcgregor got another one of his single fins. We both have a few Tudor fins.

Fuck, this weird! Borderline stalker, I know.

Anyways, I thought I'd share some Joel Tudor x Loomstate radness I found on the interweb @ Harmony Amplifier.

Here is a clip from J. Brothers Longer. Get into it.

Do Not Pass Go - Do Not Collect $200

My friend Kyle of Radballs and KyleLightnerPhotoBlog went to jail the other night...read the full story here...

Do Not Pass Go - Do Not Collect $200

This isn't his mug shot, but that is his plastic baggie of possessions straight outta' the big house. I hate laughing at other people's misfortunes, but this was pretty funny - "MR. LIGHTNER, YOU’RE UNDER ARREST."

New Link

I added my brother and his friend Mikey's Pod Cast to our fine selection of links. It is called the Dullcast.

Check it out, it is pretty much a half hour's worth of them shooting the shit about jobs, tunes, movies, rants, eating at Chili's, eating burgs, walking around, and a ton of other random shit. They have special guests on the show, so you never know who just might chime in on any given day.

I know they drew their inspiration from the Smodcast featuring Kevin Smith, whom you may know as "Silent Bob" from Jay and Silent Bob, and his longtime friend and producer, Scott Mosier.

Destroy and Enjoy.

Destroyed by Skate

I went with Tightner from Radballs to skate the Combi bowl at Vans today. Very mental. Shameful as well.

First off, I was not aware that Wednesday's are fucking pro nights. So, Omar Hassan, Josh Borden, Bennett Harada, Christian Hosoi, and a gang load of other shredders were in attendance. Shameful, I know.

Anyways, I padded up and took a warm up sesh on the 6' mini ramp, just to get the blood flowing. Did that for awhile, buttery coping, very nice.

Ok, back to business. I go back to the bowl and most of those dudes are still there and before I know it, Tightner goes for it. Effortlessly flowing in and out of the corners doing slashes on some very unforgiving pool coping. He gives me some pointers and before I know it, I am dropping in, trying not to totally kook it.

Holy shit. I haven't had that much fun in a long time. I worked myself into the rotation taking turns with some mental dudes. All of the guys were really rad, some kiwi dude from New Zealand was giving me some pointers on how to improve my bowl shredding ability. Much thanks.

I have only really skated a 5' mini ramp before, so a 11'6" deep pool was quite an adjustment, Tightner said it was definitely a very difficult bowl to skate, hopefully I will be making my way to some more user-friendly bowls and pools in the area in the upcoming weeks. So fun.

Anyways, here is a picture and some video of the beast, last year's Pro Tec Pool Party video...

Bummer It's Daley

I added our friend Daly's blog to our links. This is what his introductory post said...

"So this is the beginning. Being that, I'd really like to point at that while I'd love to think I will be writing about the music I'm listening to, the books I'm reading, and the cool threads and kicks I stumble across, in all reality it will probably just be a record of the stupid ways I get drunk and awkward documentation of my successes and failures."

He is funny as hell. I read his other blog about his Europe trip. Too funny.

'Atta boy Daly!

God went Surfing with the Devil!

Nikki Scoggins, works with Daniel and I. She and her crew are a part of a film project that sounds awesome... here it is.

Film Synopsis: God Went Surfing with the Devil

The Middle East. A region seized by war, terror, and hatred. Israel and Gaza have seen some of the worst: fifty years of retaliatory strikes, with no end in sight. Yet despite the rubble, the sniper killings, the mortar fire, the jihadist propaganda, guys are surfing. "We go to the beach to forget about the suffering," says twenty-year-old Gaza resident Mohammed Juda.

God Went Surfing With the Devil will hear from Palestinians like Mohammed A'lwan about what it's like to surf in a war zone. It will explore 16 year-old Omer Levin's pursuit of sponsorship amidst the prospect of conscription. It will document life with Abdulla, an Arab-Israeli surfer who's been shunned by fellow Arabs and attacked by Jewish settlers. It will accompany American Matt Olsen's attempts to open Gaza's first surf camp. It will visit with surfers, soldiers, militants and politicians.

It will chronicle the lives of these incredible young men, Israeli and Palestinian, who have put down their guns and picked up surfboards, reaching out to each other with hope and love in their hearts.

I will post the trailer when it comes out!

Shred

Fun surf this morning. Lots of ladybugs in the water with the help from the warm Santa Anas.

Scotty back in the water after some injuries. It was a slalom course out there. Scotty and his brother Turkey are Cycle Zombies.

Julio on some old waterlogged Harbour Nineteen. The thing was full of holes and covered in duct tape. The board is known as "The Whore." Everyone has had a ride.

Julio on a hot one.

Green Goblin

I saw this awhile back on Daily Bread.

His blog is one of the few that I actually check on a daily basis. Usually when I am at work, around lunch time. His posts usually make me regret not getting out of bed that morning to surf. If you read his blog, you know what I am talking about.

It's me.

If you want to put him up for a night during his travels, send him a message on his blog. He is currently en route to Bowie, AZ.

I have been reading his blog and his posts on LA Fixed, he seems like a cool cat.

I know you are most likely familiar with this "Get In the Van"

Photobucket

But here is the Captain Fin Co. crew with a new film, aptly titled, "Get In the Van."

Surf and Destroy's buddy, Scotty Stopnik, is featured in the film. We hope to see Scotty back in the water sooner rather than later. Last time I was at EC's I saw a new creation in the works for Scotty and Turkey.

You can check out the Cycle Zombie blog to see what those two are up to.

On to the trailer.

Get In the Van
