(This post will remain purely textual. I will not bore you with the same rehashed "photo of the marquee," "shot of the big screen," "Mattson 2 with Ray Barbee," etc. If you've ever been to an art show, film premier, you get it...and my shitty photography isn't gonna help.)
I just saw The Present at the Lido with Where Eagles Dare. Douche couldn't make it because he has diarrhea. Yes. Seriously. Diarrhea.
Anyways, we bought our tickets (to the 7pm show) and parked ourselves in the back of the line. It was long enough (That's what she said), but definitely not sell out long. I went over to Ralph's and bought a Tcat tall boy. As I got back in line, the snaking queue began its way under the marquee and into The Lido. We were almost inside when some d-bag rear-ended a BMW in front of a crowd of 200 surf hipsters and took off. Amazing.
We go inside, pass by Dan Malloy (Almost threw him a shastika, but refrained, tastefully) and seated ourselves while the Mattson 2 and Ray Barbee played. Yeah, they wail. Fool was slashing in a cast. Mental, I know.
Does any one else have any friends in a band? Are they the only band worthy of the hip surf crowd? Well, I guess the Jap Motors coulda' played. Oh, well.
Dan gave us a little spiel about the film, what 16mm is, how fun it is to make a movie, how hard Thomas has worked over the past 4 years, yadda yadda yadda (had to work in a Seinfeld reference somewhere).
I discovered that Dan talks kinda like Kermit the Frog. Where Eagles Dare concurred.
The film begins. I wait for a quiet pause to crack my tall boy. Psssshhhhttttttttt. Ahhhhh, perfect timing. Refreshment.
The Present is the feel good surf film of the year. Love your bros. Experiment with your equipment. Travel. Take cool photos. RIDE A FUCKING ALAIA.
Yes, surfing Waimea and Sunset on an alaia is gnarly. No, I don't really care to watch it. Only need to see that once, thanks. Not really gonna amp me up to surf, watching people getting stuffed on a plank. (In all seriousness, it was pretty cool to see them make some drops behind dudes on actual guns, and to get actual waves and tubes) Watching the front half of the board spring up and down to eventually pearl...mehhhhhhh, not so much.
The Indo part was radical. Dan absolutely rips the bag outta that place and educates us on the importance of saving the earth. This was probably the second time I have ever enjoyed watching a girl surf (the other exceptions being Bindy Baggs and Kassia Meador.), the girls certainly can tube ride.
Joel's history lesson was pretty cool. He mentioned Christian Fletcher, I dug that. Wished there was some more of him surfing, I guess that's what Seedling is for. He had a Jack Daniel's shirt on, I found that interesting.
Africa was cool, I hate dancing, maybe not show so much of that next time, I got the point. More waves. Michel Junod really does rip, I think Jesus was helping him, maybe. T. Campbell appeased the Al Knost hating crowd by showing him in some larger surf or a shorter board, take that.
Basically, if you've seen Seedling and Sprout, your in for the same trip, but with bigger waves. (I mean that in a positive way, two shastikas up). Man, I need to travel more....and get an alaia.
Holy fuck! I almost forgot. The scene with the coffin! Epic!
Keep your eyes peeled for Svrfandestroy's future film, "It's a Long Way Back from Hell." It's gonna be a big downer, I heard Danzig is gonna open.

Leroy "The Masochist"
I couldn't find the clip I wanted.
Psychologist: I see here they call you a masochist.
Leroy the Masochist: I like pain.
Psychologist: Can you be specific? What kind of pain do you like?
Leroy the Masochist: Any kind of pain.
Psychologist: Such as?
Leroy the Masochist: I like fights, I've dove through windows, I've eaten light bulbs, I like sharks, any kind of blood. If you gave me a gun, I'd shoot you in the face just to see what it looked like when the bullet hit.
Busey look-a-like:

The Real Deal

"Johnson! I got a vehicle!"

Dungeon of Doom

This blog rules. Dungeon of Doom. The first post had me hooked...
"Usually when i wake up in the morning, i sit down at my desk, check the surf, and cruise on to www.surfline.com for some videos and pictures to pass my morning by. i usually scoff at the shitty music that playing behind the surfing. Do all surfers have shitty music taste nowadays?"
Exactly. Douche, Lightnar, and I have had this conversation a few times. Why does surfing love shitty music? Watch any video posted on Surfer, Surfline, etc. and prepare to have your eardrums raped by Mickey Avalon.
And longboard movies were always the WORST! Fvck surf guitar. Fvck super slo-mo. I love Herbie Fletcher, but his movies always had the most terrible soundtracks. Douche and I had nowhere else to turn to get our Tudor fix.

Cyrus and TJ Shredding
My good buds from high school, Cyrus Sutton and TJ Ridings have been busy shredding their new Harbour Noseriders lately.
Some Japanese dude make silent films of them surfing. Pretty cool.
Here is the description of the video, "ハーバーサーフボード創立50周年を迎えるにあたってリリースさ れるノーズライダー。リッチ・ハー"
Translation: Get a Harbour Noserider...I actually plan on it. On January second I am going to order one, so I can get it with the 50 year anniversary logo. Tight.

Under the Sun
A good pal of the boys here at Svrf & Destroy, Cyrus Sutton, will be showing his new surf film, Under The Sun, at the La Paloma Theater on Thursday July 3 @ 8pm. There will be a little shindig afterwards.
I am at a cross roads...do I go down and see this and crash on Cyrus' couch down in Encinitas and shred Cardiff the next day or go to my first home brewing class in Culver City and buy all my gear and start the brewing of Gnarcoleptic Ale???
Here is the flyer.

God went Surfing with the Devil!
Nikki Scoggins, works with Daniel and I. She and her crew are a part of a film project that sounds awesome... here it is.
Film Synopsis: God Went Surfing with the Devil
The Middle East. A region seized by war, terror, and hatred. Israel and Gaza have seen some of the worst: fifty years of retaliatory strikes, with no end in sight. Yet despite the rubble, the sniper killings, the mortar fire, the jihadist propaganda, guys are surfing. "We go to the beach to forget about the suffering," says twenty-year-old Gaza resident Mohammed Juda.
God Went Surfing With the Devil will hear from Palestinians like Mohammed A'lwan about what it's like to surf in a war zone. It will explore 16 year-old Omer Levin's pursuit of sponsorship amidst the prospect of conscription. It will document life with Abdulla, an Arab-Israeli surfer who's been shunned by fellow Arabs and attacked by Jewish settlers. It will accompany American Matt Olsen's attempts to open Gaza's first surf camp. It will visit with surfers, soldiers, militants and politicians.
It will chronicle the lives of these incredible young men, Israeli and Palestinian, who have put down their guns and picked up surfboards, reaching out to each other with hope and love in their hearts.

I know you are most likely familiar with this "Get In the Van"

But here is the Captain Fin Co. crew with a new film, aptly titled, "Get In the Van."
Surf and Destroy's buddy, Scotty Stopnik, is featured in the film. We hope to see Scotty back in the water sooner rather than later. Last time I was at EC's I saw a new creation in the works for Scotty and Turkey.
You can check out the Cycle Zombie blog to see what those two are up to.
On to the trailer.

Need some cheese?
This is technically surf related. Remember 'In God's Hands' when the guy gets malaria and freaks out? Then his mentor drowns himself out of shame. Then Shane Dorian gets philosophical...
Catch malaria — and get $4,000 for it
Volunteers would be bitten by infected mosquitoes in vaccine study

SEATTLE - The Seattle Biomedical Research Institute will pay volunteers as much as $4,000 to be bitten by mosquitoes infected with malaria.
Scientists say no lives are in danger because the volunteers can be cured. The institute is testing which vaccines work fastest.
The head of the program, Dr. Patrick Duffy, said volunteers will spend several nights under medical supervision in a hotel.
All of the human trials will be reviewed for safety by the Food and Drug Administration.
